Elections in Arizona

The2006Arizona House of Representatives election took place on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, with the primary election held on Tuesday, September 12, 2006.[6][7]Arizona voters elected all 60 members of theArizona House of Representatives in multi-member districts to serve two-year terms.[8]

The election coincided withUnited States national elections andArizona state elections, includingU.S. Senate,U.S. House,Arizona governor, andArizona Senate.[9][10]

Following theprevious election in 2004,Republicans held a 38-to-22-seat majority overDemocrats.[11][12][13] During the legislative session, RepresentativeCheryl Chase switched political party affiliation fromDemocrat toRepublican.[a]Republicans maintained their majority in 2006, though the GOP majority narrowed to 33 seats. At 27 members,Democrats experienced a net gain of six seats.[6][9][10] The newly elected members served in the48th Arizona State Legislature, during which RepublicanJim Weiers was re-elected as Speaker of the Arizona House.[b]
