The2005 Vanderbilt Commodores football team representedVanderbilt University as a member of the Eastern Division of theSoutheastern Conference (SEC) during the2005 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led fourth-year head coachBobby Johnson, Commodores compiled an overall record of 5–6 with a mark of 3–5 in conference play, tying for fourth place in the SEC's Eastern Division. The team played home games atVanderbilt Stadium inNashville, Tennessee.

Vanderbilt won the first four games of the season, and looked to improve to 5–0 for the first time since the 1940s with a win overMiddle Tennessee on October 1. The game came down to the last play of the game, but a failed Vanderbilt field goal attempt allowed Middle Tennessee to come away with the win. The Commodores proceeded to drop its next five games and fall out ofbowl eligibility. The season ended on a high note as Vanderbilt recorded its first win over the rivalTennessee Volunteers since 1982 and the program's first win at Tennessee'sNeyland Stadium since 1975 by defeating the Volunteers, 28–24, on November 19. Vanderbilt's historic victory eliminated Tennessee from bowl eligibility. The Commodores offense scored 299 points while the defense allowed 321 points on the season.

This wasquarterbackJay Cutler's senior year. The leading receiver for the Commodores wasEarl Bennett. Other members of the team includedJonathan Goff,Thomas Welch, andChris Williams. Cutler was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He was selected 11th overall by theDenver Broncos in the2006 NFL draft the following spring, becoming the first Vanderbilt player to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft sinceWill Wolford in 1986.
