The2001–02 Philadelphia 76ers season was the 53rd season for thePhiladelphia 76ers in theNational Basketball Association, and their 39th season inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] The 76ers were coming off of anNBA Finals defeat to theLos Angeles Lakers, in which they won Game 1, but lost the next four games. During the off-season, the team re-acquired forward 76ers forwardDerrick Coleman from theCharlotte Hornets, and acquiredCorie Blount andVonteego Cummings from theGolden State Warriors in a three-team trade,[2][3][4] acquiredMatt Harpring from theCleveland Cavaliers,[5][6][7] and signed free agentDerrick McKey midway through the season.[8][9][10]

Having won the Eastern Conference Championship last season, reigning MVPAllen Iverson, Sixth ManAaron McKie, and point guardEric Snow were all sidelined with injuries as the 76ers lost their first five games of the regular season; Iverson was out with an elbow injury, while McKie had a shoulder injury, and Snow was out with a broken thumb.[11][12][13] Also just four games into the season, centerMatt Geiger retired.[14][15] However, when their players returned, they won seven in a row after their bad start, but then lost seven straight in December leading to a 8–14 start to the season. The 76ers would play above .500 basketball for the remainder of the season, holding a 25–24 record at the All-Star break,[16] and would climb back into playoff connection by finishing in fourth place in theAtlantic Division with a 43–39 record, and earning the sixth seed in theEastern Conference.[17]

Iverson averaged 31.4 points, 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game in 60 games this season, and was named to theAll-NBA Second Team, whileDikembe Mutombo averaged 11.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game and was named to theAll-NBA Third Team, and to theNBA All-Defensive Second Team. In addition, Coleman averaged 15.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while McKie provided the team with 12.2 points per game, Harpring contributed 11.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and Snow provided with 12.1 points, 6.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game.[18]

During theNBA All-Star weekend, in which the 76ers hosted at theFirst Union Center in Philadelphia, Iverson and Mutombo were both selected for the2002 NBA All-Star Game, as members of the Eastern Conference All-Star team; it was Mutombo's final All-Star appearance.[19][20][21] Iverson also wore number #6 to honor Hall of Famer, and 76ers legendJulius Erving.[22][23] Iverson finished in ninth place inMost Valuable Player voting,[24] while Mutombo finished tied in third place inDefensive Player of the Year voting.[25][24]

However, the 76ers lost in the Eastern Conference First Round of the2002 NBA playoffs to theBoston Celtics in five games.[26][27][28] Following the season, Mutombo was traded to theNew Jersey Nets,[29][30][31] while Harpring signed as a free agent with theUtah Jazz,[32][33][34] rookie guardSpeedy Claxton was traded to theSan Antonio Spurs,[35] Blount and Cummings were both released to free agency, and McKey retired.

Offseason

[edit]

During the offseason, the 76ers made multiple trades. On the same day, the 76ers would tradeRoshown McLeod and a2003 1st round draft pick to theBoston Celtics forJérôme Moïso. Harpring would be Philadelphia's starting small forward for the season, while Henderson, Traylor, and Moïso would be traded before the season started.

On October 2, the 76ers signedIra Bowman. Bowman would play 3 games before being waived on November 6.

On October 25, the 76ers were involved in a three-team trade with theGolden State Warriors and theCharlotte Hornets. The 76ers tradedCedric Henderson and a2005 1st round draft pick to the Warriors. They also tradedGeorge Lynch,Jérôme Moïso, andRobert Traylor to the Hornets. The 76ers receivedDerrick Coleman from the Hornets andCorie Blount andVonteego Cummings from the Warriors.[36]
