The53rdCannes Film Festival took place from 14 to 25 May 2000.[4] French filmmakerLuc Besson was the Jury President for the main competition.Virginie Ledoyen was the mistress of ceremonies.[5] Danish filmmakerLars von Trier won thePalme d'Or for the musical-drama filmDancer in the Dark.[6][7]

The festival opened withVatel byRoland Joffé,[8][9] and closed withStardom byDenys Arcand.[10][11]
