The2000 Ballon d'Or, given to the bestfootball player in Europe as judged by a panel of sports journalists fromUEFA member countries, was awarded toLuís Figo on 19 December 2000.[1] On 13 November 2000, the shortlist of 50 male players compiled by a group of experts fromFrance Football was announced.[2][3]
Figo was the second Portuguese player to win the award afterEusébio (1965). He was also the thirdReal Madrid player to win the trophy afterAlfredo Di Stéfano (1957, 1959) andRaymond Kopa (1958).[4]
