January – The filmHilary and Jackie , starringEmily Watson andJames Frain asJacqueline du Pré andDaniel Barenboim , is released.[ 1] 3 January –Steps score their first number one in the UK singles chart with "Heartbeat / Tragedy ".[ 2] 7 January 10 February –Iron Maiden announces that singerBruce Dickinson and guitaristAdrian Smith have rejoined the band, while lead singerBlaze Bayley has left. This means the band now has three lead guitarists.[ 3] 14 February –Elton John appears as himself in a special episode of the animated seriesThe Simpsons 16 February –Belle & Sebastian win the British Breakthrough Award at theBrit Awards , leading to allegations that voting was rigged in their favour and thatSteps would have won. Fans of Belle & Sebastian argued that the band have a large student following, and felt that the award should be given in recognition of artistic merit, rather than popularity or CD sales.25 February – The Quintet for trumpet and strings byPeter Maxwell Davies is performed for the first time in the Mitchell Hall,University of Aberdeen .21 March – Irish girl groupB*Witched score a fourth consecutive number one in the UK singles chart with "Blame It on the Weatherman ", thus becoming the first band to have all their first four singles enter at the top and setting a new record that would be broken a year later byWestlife .10 April – A charity tribute, theConcert for Linda McCartney, is held at theRoyal Albert Hall in London, hosted byEddie Izzard , with proceeds going to animal rights causes. Performers includePaul McCartney ,Chrissie Hynde ,Elvis Costello ,Sinéad O'Connor , andTom Jones .[ 4] 28 April –The Verve split for the second time. FrontmanRichard Ashcroft launches a solo career.27 May – TheBritish Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors establishes its new fellowship, the first recipient beingMartin Gore .[ 5] [ 6] 7 June –S Club 7 release their debut single "Bring It All Back ", which goes to number one in the UK singles chart.27 June – The first performance ofTobias and the Angel , a one act church cantata byJonathan Dove , takes place at Christ Church,Highbury as part of the Almeida Festival, directed by Kate Brown.28 August – FormerDexys Midnight Runners frontmanKevin Rowland is bottled offstage at theReading Festival , which saw him perform "The Greatest Love of All " whilst wearing a white dress.29 August –Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs andPaul "Guigsy" McGuigan leaveOasis . They are replaced byColin "Gem" Archer , formerly ofHeavy Stereo andAndy Bell , formerly ofRide andHurricane#1 .18 September – The first performance ofCyril Rootham ‘sThe Lady of Shalott , a setting ofTennyson ’s poem for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra, takes place in the School Hall,Eton College , by the Broadheath Singers and the Windsor Sinfonia, conducted by Robert Tucker. Rootham wrote the piece circa 1909–1910, but it was not performed in his lifetime.21 September –David Bowie releasesHours , his twenty-first studio album and the first by a major artist to be made legally available as an electronic download.[ 7] 12 November – AtBristol Crown Court , former glam rock starGary Glitter is jailed for four months for downloadingchild pornography .[ 8] 2 December –James MacMillan 's Symphony No. 2 receives its premiere atAyr Town Hall by the Scottish Chamber Symphony, with the composer conducting.[ 9] 30 December –George Harrison and his wifeOlivia fight off a knife attack by an intruder in hisFriar Park home.[ 10] December –Alan McGee announces the dissolution ofCreation Records after 16 years.
