The1998–99 season wasReal Madrid's 68th season inLa Liga.
Real Madrid sackedJupp Heynckes shortly after winning theChampions League in May and hiredJose Antonio Camacho who quit as manager in July.[1] After a failed bid onNevio Scala[2] the club appointed formerValencia coachGuus Hiddink as its new head coach. Having come fourth in theleague and achieving continental successlast season, Real Madrid was considered a favorite for the 1998–99 season. There were also new arrivals such asEdgar Pacheco,Robert Jarni andPerica Ognjenović. Despite these transfers, manager Hiddink was sacked in February due to criticizing several players. On 24 February 1999, after failed moves forFabio Capello andMarcello Lippi, the club eventually re-appointedJohn Benjamin Toshack as its new head coach,[3] helping the squad to reach a spot for the upcomingUEFA Champions League. InCopa del Rey, the team also suffered an embarrassing semi-final exit after a 2–7 aggregate loss to eventual cup winnersValencia, as well as the Champions League quarter-finals exit against Ukrainian powerhouseDynamo Kyiv, only winning the Intercontinental Cup that season.
