RepublicanBill Graves, the incumbentSecretary of State of Kansas, won the open seat vacated by the pending retirement of incumbent Democratic GovernorJoan Finney. Graves defeated DemocratJim Slattery, the congressman fromthe second congressional district.[1] Slattery himself defeated incumbentLieutenant GovernorJim Francisco and state representativeJoan Wagnon in the Democratic primary.
