The1989 Ohio State Buckeyes football team was anAmerican football team that represented theOhio State University as a member of theBig Ten Conference during the1989 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their second year under head coachJohn Cooper, the Buckeyes compiled an 8–4 record (6–2 in conference games), tied for third place in the Big Ten, and outscored opponents by a total of 325 to 266. They were ranked No. 24 in the finalAP poll.[1]

AgainstMinnesota, the Buckeyes came back from a 31–0 deficit to win, 41–37. This tied the record for the largest comeback win in college football history at the time. It remains the biggest comeback win in Ohio State history.[citation needed]

The Buckeyes gained an average of 220.5 rushing yards and 162.3 passing yards per game. On defense, they held opponents to 172.3 rushing yards and 182.2 passing yards per game.[2] The team's statistical leaders included quarterbackGreg Frey (1,900 passing yards, 59.5% completion percentage), running backCarlos Snow (948 rushing yards, 5.4 yards per carry), and wide receiverJeff Graham (27 receptions for 505 yards).[2] Offensive tackleJoe Staysniak and guardJeff Davidson received first-team honors on the1989 All-Big Ten Conference football team.[3][4]
