The38th National Basketball Association All-Star Game was played on February 7, 1988, atChicago Stadium inChicago. The East won the game 138-133 andMichael Jordan (who scored a game-high 40 points) was named theNBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The Eastern Conference team featured Jordan andDominique Wilkins, who had faced each other the preceding night in the slam dunk contest, along withBoston Celtics trioLarry Bird,Danny Ainge andKevin McHale, plusPatrick Ewing of theNew York Knicks,Maurice Cheeks andCharles Barkley of thePhiladelphia 76ers,Moses Malone of theWashington Bullets,Isiah Thomas of theDetroit Pistons,Doc Rivers of theAtlanta Hawks, andBrad Daugherty of theCleveland Cavaliers.

The Western Conference team was led byMagic Johnson of theLos Angeles Lakers,Clyde Drexler of thePortland Trail Blazers, the Utah Jazz's power forwardKarl Malone and the Houston Rockets' centerAkeem Olajuwon. Joining them wereJames Worthy andKareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Lakers,Fat Lever andAlex English of theDenver Nuggets,Xavier McDaniel of theSeattle SuperSonics,Alvin Robertson of theSan Antonio Spurs andMark Aguirre andJames Donaldson of theDallas Mavericks. In this game, Abdul-Jabbar would become the all-time leading scorer in NBA All-Star Game history, a distinction he held for 15 years.[1]

The Eastern Conference was coached byMike Fratello of theAtlanta Hawks, and the Western Conference byPat Riley of the Lakers.

The game was telecast byCBS Sports, withDick Stockton andBilly Cunningham commentating, andPat O'Brien andLesley Visser reporting from the sidelines. On radio,ABC Radio broadcast their fourth consecutive All-Star game, with Lakers announcerChick Hearn working alongside Celtics announcerJohnny Most, and the two trading roles on play-by-play and color analysis. ABC's regular NBA announcerFred Manfra served as a sideline reporter.
