The1987 European Cup final was afootball match held at thePraterstadion,Vienna, Austria, on 27 May 1987, that sawFC Porto of Portugal defeatBayern München ofWest Germany 2–1. Both sides were missing key players: the Portuguese were without their injured strikerFernando Gomes, while the Germans were missing theirsweeper and captainKlaus Augenthaler, who was suspended, along with strikerRoland Wohlfarth and midfielderHans Dorfner, who were both injured.
Porto won its first European trophy after fighting back from 1–0 down, with the goals coming from a back heel byRabah Madjer and a volley fromJuary, after aLudwig Kögl header had given Bayern the lead in the first half. This was the firstEuropean Cup final that Bayern, and their captainLothar Matthäus, would lose to successive late goals, repeated 12 years later in the1999 UEFA Champions League final againstManchester United.[1]
