The1986–87 Serie A season ended withNapoli doing the "domestic double", winning their firstScudetto and thirdCoppa Italia, spurred on by their talismanic captainDiego Maradona, who had also just played a key part inWorld Cup glory for his home country ofArgentina.
Juventus,Internazionale,Hellas Verona andMilan (beatingSampdoria after tie-breaker re-introduction) all qualified for the 1987/1988 UEFA Cup, whileBrescia,Atalanta, andUdinese in consequence ofTotonero 1986, were all relegated toSerie B.
Atalanta, while being relegated toSerie B, had the unusual distinction of also qualifying for the1987/1988Cup Winners' Cup as1986–87 Coppa Italia runners-up.
