Ivan Lendl defeatedJohn McEnroe in the final, 3–6, 2–6, 6–4, 7–5, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the1984 French Open. It was his firstmajor title, following four runner-up finishes. Lendl was the second man in theOpen Era to win a major final from two sets down, afterBjörn Borg at the1974 French Open. It was McEnroe's first defeat of the1984 season, ending a 42-match match winning streak: the best-ever unbeaten start to a season.^[1][2] This was also McEnroe's only final appearance at theclay courts of theFrench Open. The final is considered one of the greatest matches ever played.^[3][4]

Yannick Noah was the defending champion, but lost toMats Wilander in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the previous year's final.
