The1982 State of the Union Address was given by the 40thpresident of the United States,Ronald Reagan, on January 26, 1982, at 9:00 p.m.EST, in the chamber of theUnited States House of Representatives to the97th United States Congress. It was Reagan's firstState of the Union Address and hissecond speech to ajoint session of the United States Congress. Presiding over this joint session was theHouse speaker,Tip O'Neill, accompanied byGeorge H. W. Bush, thevice president in his capacity as thepresident of the Senate.

The speech lasted 40 minutes and 14 seconds[1] and contained 5154 words.[2] The address was broadcast live on radio and television.

The speech was the first to acknowledge a special guest,Lenny Skutnik, who was an ordinary hero ofAir Florida Flight 90 took place two weeks earlier. Taking the place ofSupreme Court JusticeByron White was retired JusticePotter Stewart.

TheDemocratic Partyresponse was delivered by SenatorDonald Riegle (MI), SenatorJames Sasser (TN), Rep.Albert Gore Jr. (TN), SenatorRobert Byrd (WV), SenatorEdward Kennedy (MA), House SpeakerThomas P. O'Neill III (MA), SenatorGary Hart (CO), SenatorPaul Sarbanes (MD), SenatorJ. Bennett Johnston (LA), and SenatorAlan Cranston (CA).[3]
