IncumbentDemocratic governorHugh Gallen ran for re-election but was defeated byTufts University professorJohn Sununu. Sununu, who defeatedLou D'Allesandro for the Republican nomination, became the first Arab-American governor of New Hampshire. Gallen died just over a week before Sununu's inauguration.
