The1980–81 DDR-Oberliga was the 32nd season of theDDR-Oberliga, the first tier ofleague football inEast Germany.

The league was contested by fourteen teams.BFC Dynamo won the championship, the club's third of ten consecutive East German championships from 1978 to 1988.[3][4]

Joachim Streich of1. FC Magdeburg was the league's top scorer with 20 goals,[5] whileHans-Ulrich Grapenthin ofFC Carl Zeiss Jena took out the seasonsEast German Footballer of the year award.[6]

On the strength of the 1980–81 title BFC Dynamo qualified for the1981–82 European Cup where the club was knocked out byAston Villa in the second round. Sixth-placed club1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig qualified for the1981–82 European Cup Winners' Cup as the seasonsFDGB-Pokal winners and lost toFC Barcelona in the quarter finals. Second-placedFC Carl Zeiss Jena qualified for the1981–82 UEFA Cup where it was knocked out in the second round byReal Madrid while third-placed1. FC Magdeburg lost toBorussia Mönchengladbach in the first round and fourth-placedDynamo Dresden was eliminated byFeyenoord Rotterdam in the second round.[7]
