IncumbentRepublican U.S. SenatorWallace F. Bennett did not run for re-election to a fifth term, but retired. Republican nomineeJake Garn defeatedDemocratic nomineeWayne Owens. This is the last Senate election thatSalt Lake County voted Democratic.
