The1973 U.S. Women's Open was the 28thU.S. Women's Open, held July 19–22 at theCountry Club of Rochester inRochester, New York.
Defending championSusie Berning won the third of her three U.S. Women's Open titles, five strokes ahead of runners-upGloria Ehret andShelley Hamlin.[1][4] After a three-under 69 in the third round, Berning was the co-leader withPam Higgins, two strokes ahead of 36-hole leaderSharon Miller.[5][6]
Berning was the third of seven tosuccessfully defend the championship, followingMickey Wright in1959 andDonna Caponi in1970; it was the last of her fourmajor titles.
The championship was held at the course twenty years earlier in1953, the first Women's Open conducted by theUnited States Golf Association (USGA). It was the second consecutive Women's Open played in the state ofNew York; the1972 edition was atWinged Foot inMamaroneck.
