The1972 United States presidential election in North Carolina took place on November 7, 1972, as part of the1972 United States presidential election . Voters chose 13 representatives, or electors to theElectoral College , who voted forpresident andvice president .
Amidst a nationwide landslide defeat especially felt in the South, McGovern won only two counties in North Carolina, neither of which have voted for a Republican presidential candidate since theFourth Party System era:Orange County in theResearch Triangle region, home of theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , and majority-Black Northampton County in the northeast of the state.[ 2] Walter Mondale in1984 would still win by double digits), McGovern won by less than five points.[ 3] [ 4] [ 5]
