The1964 United States presidential election in Iowa took place on November 3, 1964, as part of the1964 United States presidential election. Iowa voters chose nine[2] representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

Iowa was won byincumbent PresidentLyndon B. Johnson (DTexas), with 61.88% of the popular vote, againstSenatorBarry Goldwater (RArizona), with 37.92% of the popular vote.[3][4] As of the2016 presidential election[update], this is the last election in whichPottawattamie County,Plymouth County,Mahaska County,Mills County,Harrison County,Grundy County,Shelby County,Montgomery County,Fremont County,Ida County, andOsceola County voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.[5] This was the first time since1948 that the state would back a Democrat in a presidential election, and the last such occasion until1988.

As of2024, this remains the strongest performance by a Democrat in Iowa.[6]
