It was hosted by England as part of theFootball Association 's centenary celebration.
A match between East Germany and Czechoslovakia (3-0) may have been related to the qualifying stage as well.
The following teams qualified for the tournament:
East Germany also received aBye for the qualifying stage but withdrew before the start of the tournament. After this, aBye was given to both Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union who were drawn against each other for the qualifying stage.
