The1958 NCAA University Division basketball tournament involved 24 schools playing insingle-elimination play to determine the national champion of men'sNCAA Division Icollege basketball in the United States. The 20th annual edition of the tournament began on March 11, and ended with thechampionship game on Saturday, March 22, atFreedom Hall inLouisville, Kentucky.[1][2] A total of 28 games were played, including a third-place game in each region and a national third-place game.

Led by head coachAdolph Rupp, theKentucky Wildcats won the national title with an 84–72 victory in the final game overSeattle, coached byJohn Castellani.[1] The Chieftains led by39–36 at the half, but star forwardElgin Baylor picked up his fourth personal foul with over sixteen minutes remaining.[1] The Chieftains were outscored by fifteen in the second half, and Baylor was named the tournament'sMost Outstanding Player.[1][2]
