The1958 Idaho Vandals football team represented theUniversity of Idaho in the1958 college football season. TheVandals were led by fifth-year head coachSkip Stahley and were members of thePacific Coast Conference, which disbanded the following spring. Home games were played on campus atNeale Stadium inMoscow, with one home game inBoise atold Bronco Stadium atBoise Junior College.

The Vandals suffered a fourth straight loss in theBattle of the Palouse with neighborWashington State, blanked 0–8 at home onOctober 11.[1][2] In the rivalry game withMontana at Missoula, the Vandals ran their winning streak over the Grizzlies to seven and retained theLittle Brown Stein.[3]

Notable players

AlthoughJerry Kramer andWayne Walker began their long careers in theNFL in1958, the Vandals retained some notable players.

JuniorJim Norton ofFullerton, California was a safety and punter for nine seasons with theHouston Oilers; he was the all-time interceptions leader in theAmerican Football League and his #43 was the first retired by the franchise.

Jim Prestel ofIndianapolis was a defensive tackle for eight seasons in the NFL, primarily with the expansionMinnesota Vikings. Aredshirt junior, he missed most of theprevious season due to his mother's terminal illness.[18][19] Selected in thesixth round of the1959 NFL draft, 70th overall, he was granted another year of eligibility and played for Idaho in1959 and began his pro career with theCleveland Browns in1960. Prestel was also a standout player on theVandal basketball team.[20] He played in his final game at Idaho in theBattle of the Palouse in late October with a broken foot, then was sidelined and missed the basketball season.[21]

No Vandals made the All-Coast team, but tackle Pete Johnson was a second team selection. Honorable mention were tackleJim Prestel, guard Jim Roussos, and back Bob Dehlinger.[22][23]
