The1956 United States presidential election in Washington took place on November 6, 1956, as part of the1956 United States presidential election. Voters chose nine[3] representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

Washington was won byincumbent PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower (RPennsylvania), running with Vice PresidentRichard Nixon, with 53.91% of the popular vote, againstAdlai Stevenson (DIllinois), running withSenatorEstes Kefauver, with 45.44% of the popular vote.[4][5]

Eisenhower became the first Republican to carry Washington more than once.

  1. ^Although he was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas before his military career, at the time of the 1952 election Eisenhower was president ofColumbia University and was, officially, a resident of New York. During his first term as president, he moved his private residence toGettysburg, Pennsylvania, and officially changed his residency to Pennsylvania.
