New Mexico was won by incumbent PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower by a 16-point landslide. Running against Eisenhower was formerGovernor of IllinoisAdlai Stevenson, whom Eisenhower had earlier defeated for thePresidency in1952.[2] This election reflected one of the last election cycles where theDemocratic Party still had their postCivil War political domination of theDeep South. This was also the last United States presidential election when either major party nominee was born in the nineteenth century.
^Although he was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas before his military career, at the time of the 1952 election Eisenhower was president ofColumbia University and was, officially, a resident of New York.
