The1956 United States presidential election in Connecticut took place on November 6, 1956, as part of the1956 United States presidential election which was held throughout all contemporary 48 states. Voters chose eight representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
Connecticut voted for theRepublican nominee, incumbentPresidentDwight D. Eisenhower ofPennsylvania, over theDemocratic nominee, formerGovernorAdlai Stevenson ofIllinois. Eisenhower ran with incumbentVice PresidentRichard Nixon ofCalifornia, while Stevenson's running mate wasSenatorEstes Kefauver ofTennessee. Eisenhower won Connecticut by a margin of 27.46%, which made Connecticut 12% more Republican than the nation-at-large and Eisenhower's eighth-best state in the nation.
To date, this is the last time that the cities ofMiddletown,New Britain, andNew Haven, as well as the town ofBloomfield voted Republican. In addition, this is the last election where a Republican candidate won more than 70% in any Connecticut county.
Connecticut would not vote for a Republican presidential candidate again until Eisenhower's vice president,Richard Nixon, won the state in his re-election bid in1972.
