On election day, 8 November 1949,Democratic nomineeLewis Preston Collins II won re-election by a margin of 114,442 votes against his opponentRepublican nominee E. Thomas McGuire, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of lieutenant governor. Collins was sworn in for his second term on 20 January 1950.[2]
