The1949 AAA Championship Car season consisted of 14 races, beginning inArlington ,Texas on April 24 and concluding inDel Mar ,California on November 6. There were also two non-championship events. TheAAA National Champion wasJohnnie Parsons , and theIndianapolis 500 winner wasBill Holland . The season was marred by George Metzler's death atIndianapolis in practice,Bill Sheffler 's death atTrenton also in practice, andRex Mays 's death in the final race atDel Mar .
