Elections in New Mexico

The1948 United States presidential election in New Mexico took place on November 2, 1948. All 48 states were part of the1948 United States presidential election. State voters chose four electors to represent them in theElectoral College, which voted forPresident andVice President.

New Mexico was won by incumbent PresidentHarry S. Truman,[1] who took theOval Office after the death of PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt. Running against Truman wasGovernor of New YorkThomas E. Dewey, who was strongly predicted to win the contest.[2]Dixiecrat candidateStrom Thurmond took portions of theSouth, but was not evenon the ballot in New Mexico and otherWestern states.

As of the2024 presidential election[update], this is the last election in whichUnion County andHarding County voted for a Democratic presidential candidate and the last until 2020 in whichValencia County voted for a losing candidate.[3]
