The1944 United States presidential election in Virginia took place on November 7, 1944, throughout the 48contiguous states. Voters chose 11 representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
Virginia voted for theDemocratic nominee, incumbentPresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt, over theRepublican nominee,New YorkGovernorThomas E. Dewey. Roosevelt ultimately won the national election with 53.39% of the vote.
This was the last election until2020 where the Democratic candidate won Virginia by a double-digit margin. It was also the last time that the following county-equivalents voted for a Democratic presidential nominee:Augusta County,[1]Mathews County,[2]Northumberland County,[3]Richmond County[4] andRoanoke County.[5] The independent city ofStaunton did not vote Democratic again untilBarack Obama in2008.
