The1940 Louisville Cardinals football team was anAmerican football team that represented theUniversity of Louisville as a member of theKentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and theSouthern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) during the1940 college football season. In their fifth season under head coachLaurie Apitz, the Cardinals compiled an overall record of 3–5–1 with a mark of 0–2 in both KIAC and SIAA play.[1][2]

Louisville was ranked at No. 383 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under theLitkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.[3]
