Elections in New Mexico

The1936 United States presidential election in New Mexico took place on November 3, 1936. All contemporary forty-eight states were part of the1936 United States presidential election. State voters chose three electors to represent them in theElectoral College, which voted forPresident andVice President.

New Mexico was won by incumbent PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt in a 26-point landslide againstKansas GovernorAlf Landon. Roosevelt won every county in the state saveSocorro County, which he lost by only 53 votes.[1] Roosevelt was the first Democrat to ever carrySan Miguel County andValencia County, although this was the only occasion between statehood (in 1911) and1960 that Valencia County backed a Democrat. This election is the last time a Democrat has carriedLincoln County andSan Juan County has only backed a Democrat once (in1964) since this election.[2]

Union Party candidateWilliam Lemke won 924 votes, 0.5 percent of the state's total.[3]
