The1932 United States presidential election in South Dakota took place on November 8, 1932, as part of the1932 United States presidential election. Voters chose four[1] representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

South Dakota was won byGovernorFranklin D. Roosevelt (DNew York), running withSpeakerJohn Nance Garner, with 63.62 percent of the popular vote, againstincumbent PresidentHerbert Hoover (RCalifornia), running with Vice PresidentCharles Curtis, with 34.40 percent of the popular vote.[2]

As a result of his win in the state, Roosevelt became only the second Democratic presidential candidate to win South Dakota as well as the first sinceWilliam Jennings Bryan in1896.

This is the only occasion since South Dakota's statehood whenCampbell County,Hutchinson County,Sully County andTurner County have voted for a Democratic presidential candidate,[3] and the last occasion whenButte County andMcPherson County have done so.[4] Every county except for arch-YankeeLawrence County voted for Roosevelt.

This election constitutes the most raw votes a Democrat has ever received in South Dakota. Along withNorth Dakota in the same year, this is the longest standing such record.[5] It is one of just seven states where a candidate other thanJoe Biden in2020 orBarack Obama in either of his runs holds the record for most raw votes ever received by a Democrat for president, the other six beingRhode Island andWest Virginia (Lyndon Johnson),Louisiana andArkansas (Bill Clinton),North Dakota (Franklin D. Roosevelt), andOklahoma (Jimmy Carter).[citation needed]
