1917–1919 Brazil strike movement was a Brazilian industry and commercestrike starting in July 1917 inSão Paulo, duringWorld War I, promoting by anarchist-inspired workers' organizations allied with the libertarian press.[1] From 1917 to 1919, a largestrike movement shook theFirst Brazilian Republic, concentrated in São Paulo andRio de Janeiro.[2] It culminated in severalgeneral strikes in 1917 and an attemptedanarchist uprising in November 1918. The 1917 general strike is considered the firstgeneral strike in thelabor history ofBrazil, and marks the beginning of the period known as the five red years (quinquennio rosso).[3][4]
