The1912 Vermont gubernatorial election took place on September 3, 1912. Incumbent RepublicanJohn A. Mead, per the "Mountain Rule",[1] did not run for re-election to a second term asGovernor of Vermont. Republican candidateAllen M. Fletcher defeated Democratic candidateHarland B. Howe and Progressive candidateFraser Metzger to succeed him. Since no candidate won a majority of the popular vote, the election was decided by theVermont General Assembly in accordance with the state constitution, where Fletcher was elected with 163 votes to 76 for Howe and 32 for Metzger.[2][3]
This was the last time until1986 that none of the gubernatorial candidates received a majority of the vote.[4]
