The1912 United States presidential election in New Hampshire took place onNovember5,1912, as part of the1912 United States presidential election which was held throughout all contemporary 48 states. Voters chose four representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
New Hampshire was won by theDemocratic nominees, New JerseyGovernorWoodrow Wilson and IndianaGovernorThomas R. Marshall. Wilson and Marshall defeated incumbentPresidentWilliam Howard Taft, and his running mateVice PresidentJames S. Sherman andProgressive Party candidates, former PresidentTheodore Roosevelt and his running mate CaliforniaGovernorHiram Johnson.
Wilson won New Hampshire by a narrow margin of 2.05 points, becoming the first Democratic presidential candidate since New Hampshire nativeFranklin Pierce in1852 to win the state or populousHillsborough andStrafford Counties. He was the first Democrat sinceGrover Cleveland in1892 to carry any of New Hampshire's counties, the first since Cleveland in1888 to carryMerrimack andRockingham Counties, the first to winBelknap County since Cleveland in1884, and the first to win Grafton County sinceWinfield S. Hancock in1880.[1]
Although Taft ended up losing the state, New Hampshire would prove to be his second strongest state with 37.43 percent of the vote afterUtah (Taft's sole other win beside neighboringVermont).[2]
This was the last time until2008 that a Democratic presidential nominee would carryCarroll County.Belknap,Grafton,Merrimack andRockingham Counties would not vote Democratic until1964.[1]
