Season summary

[edit]
H. Jason-Saunders was appointed chairman in 1909 and held the position until 1922, by which timeBrentford was a member of theFootball League.

Brentford managerFred Halliday assembled a small squad for the 1909–10 season, with the club having withdrawn from theWestern League and United League in favour of concentrating solely on theSouthern League.[1] A handful of the previous season's squad was retained and in came a number of new players, includinggoalkeeperArchie Ling and former Brentford pairJock Hamilton andAdam Bowman.[1] The club adopted new colours prior to the season, with the gold and blue-striped shirts being replaced by a gold shirt with a blue 'V' on the front and back.[1]

Injury tocaptainDusty Rhodes, illness suffered by Jock Hamilton and poor form fromforwardGeorge Rushton contributed to Brentford's bad start to the First Division season.[1] Manager Halliday was forced to play naturalcentre forward Adam Bowman atinside forward, which conflicted with centre forwardGeordie Reid's role and necessitated the transfer swap of Bowman forPortsmouth inside forwardBill McCafferty in October 1909.[1] After exiting theFA Cup in the second round at the hands ofAccrington Stanley, Brentford emerged from a poorChristmas and January to win 10 and draw four of the final 17 matches of the season.[2] The Bees finished comfortably in 14th position.[1]
