The1908 United States presidential election in West Virginia took place on November 3, 1908, as part of the1908 United States presidential election. Voters chose seven representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.[2]
West Virginia was won by the 42ndSecretary of WarWilliam Howard Taft (R–Ohio), running withrepresentativeJames S. Sherman, with 53.42 percent of the popular vote, against formerrepresentativeWilliam Jennings Bryan (D–Nebraska), running withJohn W. Kern, a formerIndiana state senator with 43.17 percent of the popular vote.[2] Taft won the state by a margin of 10.25%.
The Prohibition Party ranEugene W. Chafin (P–Wisconsin) withAaron S. Watkins, the president ofAsbury College and received 1.99 percent of the vote. The Socialist Party of America chosefour-time candidate forPresident of the United StatesEugene V. Debs (S–Indiana), running withBen Hanford, and received 1.43 percent of the popular vote.
Bryan had previously lost West Virginia toWilliam McKinley in both1896 and1900.
