The1898 Minnesota lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on 8 November 1898 in order to elect theLieutenant Governor of Minnesota.Republican nomineeLyndon A. Smith defeated Democratic-People's nominee and candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the1896 electionJames Madison Bowler,Prohibition nomineeAddison H. Gilmore andMidroad Populist nominee and former member of theUnited States House of Representatives fromMinnesota's 5th districtKittel Halvorson.[1]

General election

On election day, 8 November 1898,Republican nomineeLyndon A. Smith won the election by a margin of 24,743 votes against his foremost opponent Democratic-People's nomineeJames Madison Bowler, thereby retaining Republican control over the office of Lieutenant Governor. Smith was sworn in as the 15thLieutenant Governor of Minnesota on 3 January 1899.[2]
