The1896 United States presidential election in Nebraska took place on November 3, 1896. All contemporary 45 states were part of the1896 United States presidential election. Voters chose eight electors to theElectoral College, which selected thepresident andvice president.
Nebraska was won by theDemocratic nominees,former U.S. Representative and Nebraska nativeWilliam Jennings Bryan and his Democratic running mateArthur Sewall ofMaine. Four electors cast their vice presidential ballots forThomas E. Watson, who was Bryan's running mate on thePopulist Party. They defeated theRepublican nominees, formerGovernor of OhioWilliam McKinley and his running mateGarret Hobart ofNew Jersey. Bryan won his home state by a margin of 5.35%.
As a result of his win, Bryan became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Nebraska. He would later lose the state to McKinley in1900, but win it again againstWilliam Howard Taft in1908. Bryan's two wins in the state are the only times a Democrat has carried Nebraska without winning the presidency, althoughKamala Harris would win one of the state's electoral votes in her unsuccessful2024 presidential bid.
