Whitcomb defeatedDemocratic nominee and formerMayor of StillwaterMahlon Black,Greenback nominee Orin H. Page andProhibition nominee Theodore G. Carter.[1]
On election day, 5 November 1878,Republican nomineeOrlan P. Whitcomb won re-election by a margin of 19,940 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nomineeMahlon Black, thereby retaining Republican control over the office of state auditor. Whitcomb was sworn in for his third term on 7 January 1879.[2]
