• May –Sophia Jex-Blake qualifies as a Licentiate of the King’s and Queen’s College of Physicians of Ireland (LKQCPI).
• 7/9 July –Pedro II of Brazil,Emperor of Brazil, arrived in Belfast on theSS Antrim as part of a largely unpublicised visit to Ireland. As part of the trip, he visited theGiant's Causeway, Dublin, the lakes of Killarney, and Cork. The emperor and his entourage departed Ireland on the 11th July.^[1][2][3][4]
• 1 September – thenarrow gaugeBallymena and Larne Railway starts operations inCounty Antrim, fromLarne toBallyclare for goods traffic.^[5]
• 14 August –National Museum of Ireland established inDublin.
