The1872 United States presidential election in Massachusetts took place on November 5, 1872. All contemporary 37 states were part of the1872 United States presidential election. The state voters chose 13 electors to theElectoral College, which selected thepresident andvice president.
Massachusetts was won by theRepublican nominees, incumbentPresidentUlysses S. Grant ofIllinois and his running mateSenatorHenry Wilson of Massachusetts. Grant and Wilson defeated theLiberal Republican andDemocratic nominees, formerCongressmanHorace Greeley ofNew York and his running mate formerSenator andGovernorBenjamin Gratz Brown ofMissouri by a margin of 38.51%.
With 69.20% of the popular vote, Massachusetts would be Grant's fifth strongest victory in terms of percentage in the popular vote afterVermont,South Carolina,Rhode Island andNebraska.[2]
This is the last election in whichBrighton,Charlestown, andWest Roxbury voted in, as all three were annexed by the city ofBoston in 1873.
