The1871 Minnesota Attorney General election was held on 7 November 1871 in order to elect theattorney general of Minnesota.Republican nominee andincumbent attorney generalFrancis R. E. Cornell defeatedDemocratic nominee and incumbent ember of theMinnesota Senate from the 18th districtJohn L. MacDonald andTemperance nominee Uzzel F. Sargent.[1]
On election day, 7 November 1871,Republican nomineeFrancis R. E. Cornell won re-election by a margin of 16,327 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nomineeJohn L. MacDonald, thereby retaining Republican control over the office of attorney general. Cornell was sworn in for his third term on 9 January 1872.[2]
