13 January – the story magazineThe People's Friend is first published inDundee; it will continue to be published byD. C. Thomson & Co. more than 140 years later.
27 March – theJapanese ironcladRyūjō is launched atAlexander Hall and Company's shipyard inAberdeen.^[1]
13 September – theSolway Junction Railway is opened foriron ore traffic, including a 1 mile 8 chain (1.8 km) viaduct across theSolway Firth.
October – the 'Edinburgh Seven', led bySophia Jex-Blake, start to attend lectures at theUniversity of Edinburgh Medical School, the first women in the UK to do so (although they will not be allowed to take degrees there).^[2]
22 November – theclipper shipCutty Sark is launched inDumbarton, one of the last clippers built and the only one to survive in the UK.^[3]
TheCongregation of the Most Holy Redeemer first takes up residence atSt Mary's Monastery, Kinnoull,Perth (built 1866-8), the firstRoman Catholic monastery established in Scotland since theReformation.^[4]
Inverness Cathedral (Scottish Episcopal Church) is opened for worship as the first new Protestant cathedral to be completed in Great Britain since the Reformation.^[5]
An Episcopal chapel fromSt Andrews is moved stone by stone in fishing boats toBuckhaven and re-erected there.^[6]
TheCaledonian Brewery is established inShandon, Edinburgh, by George Lorimer and Robert Clark.
Thomas McCall ofKilmarnock builds twovelocipedes driven by levers to cranks on the rear wheel.^[7]
