On election day, 13 October 1857,Democratic nomineeCharles H. Berry won the election by a margin of 899 votes against his opponentRepublican nominee George Nourse, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of attorney general. Berry was sworn in as the 1stattorney general of Minnesota on 11 May 1858.[2]
