1 January –civil registry of births, deaths and marriages in Scotland replaces parish church registers.^[1]
c. February – establishment of the Industrial Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, a predecessor of theNational Museum of Scotland, with chemistGeorge Wilson as its director. In August he is also appointedRegius Professor of Technology in theUniversity of Edinburgh, the first such post in Britain.^[2] This year also he publishesResearches on Colour-Blindness.
16 February – emigrant shipTornado sails fromBroomielaw in Glasgow with 500 settlers bound forMelbourne.^[3]
25 July –Robert Napier and Sons launchRMS Persia on theRiver Clyde, the first iron-hulled ship for theCunard Line and the world's largest at this date (3300 grt, 398 ft (121 m)).
5 November –Inverness and Nairn Railway opened, connectingInverness to the railway network.
17 November – explorerDavid Livingstone discoversVictoria Falls in Africa.^[4]
