On election day, 3 August 1854,Democratic nomineeThomas Bragg won the election by a margin of 2,061 votes against his opponentWhig nomineeAlfred Dockery, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of Governor. Bragg was sworn in as the 34thGovernor of North Carolina on 1 January 1855.[2]
