On election day, 6 August 1846, incumbentWhig governorWilliam Alexander Graham won re-election by a margin of 7,859 votes against his opponentDemocratic nominee James B. Shepard, thereby retaining Whig control over the office of governor. Graham was sworn in for his second term on 1 January 1847.[2]
