Apresidential election was held inSouth Carolina on November 23, 1840 as part of the1840 United States presidential election.[1] The state legislature chose 11 representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, rather than by popular vote,[2] who voted forpresident andvice president.[citation needed]
South Carolina cast 11 electoral votes for theDemocratic candidateMartin Van Buren. These electors were chosen by theSouth Carolina General Assembly, the state legislature. The General Assembly refused to support the currentVice PresidentRichard Mentor Johnson, instead voting forLittleton Tazewell of Virginia for Vice President.
